Letter to the public from HKRS

HKRS has been relying on sales of rabbit supplies, boarding and grooming service, in addition to donors’ support to survive for 10 years.

Nevertheless, HKRS is facing a big obstacle. We have accepted 95 abandoned rabbits up to 12 September 2015, most of which being elders or sick. The oldest one is 8.5 years old, and most of them are suffering from illnesses in their respiratory system, eyes, ears, tumors, liver failure etc, in addition to the need for sterilization in over 99% of them.

Total abandoned rabbits in HKRS now: 80
A. Open for adoption: 33
B. With foster parent: 13
C. Sick and older: 34 (18 of which accepted in 2015)

20 of those are under medical treatment, with the need for weekly medical revisit and blood test. 14 of them are in stable condition but need long-term supplements. We’re facing an average of 60 thousand dollars of medical expenses per month, not to mention surgeries, supplements, sterilization, and daily expenses like food and beddings.

According to our surplus, how long can we survive? 1 month? 2 months? Even we ourselves are not sure…

On 8 September, abandoned bunny Baymax had an eye surgery, that costed us around 10 thousand dollars, making the situation even worse.

Without your support, HKRS’s 10-year vision “Love animals, no abandonment” and the promise to take care of those no one adopts until they pass can hardly sustain, HKRS may have to close down. What will happen to those abandoned rabbits? We can’t even hold a temporary asylum for them?

Can you give a hand and support us?

1. Monthly donation, with a minimum of $50. With $50 a month, a year of that can support a sterilization operation. $100 a month can support an older rabbit’s medical expenses. (Compared to one-off donations, monthly regular donations help us with more stable resources to take care of older and sick rabbits, as they require an extra $400-800 for medical checkup and drugs, when compared to healthy rabbits, who only require routine food and bedding expenses. Another reason is that sick and older rabbits usually stay with us for a loner time, we thus need more stable resources for a better planning. We will send receipts for donors for tax reduction purposes to save administrative work.)

Please make your donations to “Hong Kong Rabbit Society Limited”
